New board member and musical theater classes in North Clackamas

Wonder what your local district is up to while school’s out? Here are some answers:
North Clackamas: I caught up with the newest North Clackamas School Board member, Trisha Claxton, and she talked about bringing a teacher’s outlook to the board. Also, Clackamas High School Junior Jasmin Johnson is organizing musical theater classes to benefit the arts program, which is going through cuts this summer.
Also, there are only two weeks left in the summer lunch programs at Lot Whitcomb and Lewelling elementary schools.
Lake Oswego: My colleague Wendy Owen talked to Superintendent Bill Korach about recently-passed legislation that would allow open enrollment across the state, and what it could mean for students and families.
Oregon City: The Oregon City chapter of the Kiwanis Club spruced up the front of Ogden Middle School, reports The Oregon City News. One member said they were happy to take on the project so kids could be more proud of their building.
Canby: John Steach, formerly of the Richland School District, has transitioned into his new role as the Canby School District superintendent, and the Canby Herald caught up with him this summer (subscription required).
Elsewhere: The New York Times explores the debate over how to educate deaf students, mentioning that Oregon is one of the states that has recently relied on cuts to institutions for the deaf during difficult budgetary times. And if your recent high school graduate is off to a public institution, chances are they won’t be able to light up a cigarette on campus, since more Oregon colleges are looking to ban tobacco.
