Arguably one of the most high profile education leaders in the country, Michelle Rhee resigned this week as the Chancellor of the District of Columbia schools.
For the past three years, Rhee worked against seemingly insurmountable odds in an effort to improve the worst performing school system in the nation. During her tenure scores and enrollment increased, but in the end politics took it’s toll. Rhee’s boss, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, lost his reelection bid due in part to significant support from DC’s teacher unions for Fenty’s opponent Vincent C. Gray.
What a shock. Politics getting in the way of improving schools. Alert the media!
Although she’s out of a job at the moment, I don’t expect her unemployed status will last for long. Both New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and Newark Mayor Cory Booker are looking to lure Rhee to the Garden State.
Rhee is smart, hardworking, and has no tolerance for the status quo when it involves putting the needs of children last. Washington, D.C.’s loss could be New Jersey’s big, big gain.
I think any state or district would be lucky to land Rhee. Her unswerving commitment to the children of Washington, D.C. makes her one of the few “superheroes” in the documentary Waiting for Superman.
